Aim
By reviewing the evidence base relating to pain, to equip pharmacists to optimise the management of pain in practice.

Intended learning outcomes
Having completed this workshop you should be able to:

• Differentiate between acute and chronic pain
• Use appropriate methods to assess pain in different categories of patients
• Apply a step-wise approach to the management of mild, moderate and severe pain
• Appreciate the range of methods available for the administration of analgesia
• Understand opioid equivalence and the complexities involved in changing patients from one opioid to another
• Use an evidence based approach to managing neuropathic pain.

All pharmacists who wish to develop their knowledge of pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies to enhance the management of both acute and chronic pain.
